Running into 2020 like… dare I say it – BA!
After Burpee like BA was over, many people asked what was our next adventure. Our answer was nothing! However, that did not last very long. Aksel decided to sign up for Lincoln Half-marathon, so of course, I did too. But instead of just running, we decided to do 10 burpees at the beginning, every mile and at the end so 150 total. Then with our spouse and friends, we went after a 10-mile Spartan event. Along with these same crazy friends, we kept running over the summer on the trails and signed up for the Lincoln Halfsy. So, needless to say, we stayed active after the burpee event. But how did this specific idea happen. Well, one day while running (late Summer/early Fall) 2019, I had the thought, “I wonder if could run all the Lincoln trails? How many miles would that be?” So I looked it up when I got home and found out it was approx.. 78 miles. I thought in my head, “I can do that all in one day.” I told Aksel about it and he said he also thought about running all the Lincoln trails. So, the plan was hatched to do that. We would name it RUN like BA to play off the burpee event. Then we told Sean, a friend who is much more sensible than Aksel and I. He said, “Well that is great. Here is the deal though; doing 45 hours of burpee is pretty BA. However, if you only run an 8-9 minute mile, that is not BA and no one will run the 78 miles with you. Change the name; especially if you want the city involved.” We laughed but knew he was right. He came up with the name ‘Lincoln Trail-a-thon 2020.’ After this, I approached the GPTN (Great Plains Trail Network) to see if they would want to partner and benefit from this idea. They did! From there, we started mapping out the trails, calling people and getting people involved. And now, we have local sponsors and many people excited and ready to explore the trails. As far as we can tell, no one has ever put together a plan to walk, run or jog all the Lincoln trails. There are biking events that explore the trails system but nothing for runners. Lincoln Trail-a-thon 2020 is a one-of-a-kind event that is geared to get individuals inspired to be healthier by exploring their city. Will you join us?
The idea: Run, jog or walk all the Lincoln trials in 2020. Approximately 78 miles of trails.
The goal: First and foremost it is to inspire individuals to be healthier by getting outdoors to enjoy what Lincoln has to offer; an amazing trail system. But even more, it is to: (1) GIVE back (2) EXPLORE new trails (3) CONQUER a common goal.
The cost: Registration is $25 per individual. Registering guarantees a t-shirt plus the money “GIVES BACK” to help GPTN maintain existing trails and create new trails. Register HERE.
The plan: Each month a different trail will be explored and conquered. Visit us on facebook to learn more. You may choose to follow this plan or rearrange it to create a plan that fits your schedule. The plan that was created tried to do two things: (1) keep the exploration to a reasonable distance (2) keep trails grouped together based on location. Each month, a reminder of which trail(s), trail maps and tips will be posted. This will keep everyone moving in the same direction. Trails that lead out of Lincoln were not included.
We look forward to seeing you on the trails!
