You may be asking yourself, what does that mean? Think vertical…Live Horizontal. It is simple really. We are to think more about one reality yet at the same time be effective and alive in another reality? Huh? Let me put it this way: Our thoughts are to set on something higher than what we see in front of our eyes yet we have to live with what is in front of our eyes. Our mindset and what we think about (thinking vertically – thoughts & intentions) helps use live the day to day (living horizontally – habits & actions).
Col. 3:2, Rom. 12:2 & 1 Pet. 1:13 reads, “Set your mind on things above… Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.” My friends, Christ is revealed and setting our thoughts and intentions on Him is the process of thinking vertically. Thinking vertically not only helps our intimacy with Christ (the fullness of God revealed) but it helps our habits, actions & relationships with those around us (living horizontally). Think about it this way: What we think about most often we become like that or we end up doing it. So what we set our mind upon is the habit or action that is formed. What we think about most often is the attitude we will carry into our relationships. JH Miller said it this way, “Your living is determined not so much by what your life brings to you as the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.” Setting our mind on things above (thinking vertically) sets a foundation for everything that we do (living horizontally). And as we are captured and captivated by the love of Christ (thinking vertically) - living horizontally becomes so much sweeter producing fruit that is ‘ love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness & gentleness…’ And my friends – that makes living horizontally so much more fulfilling for not only yourself but everyone! Today, think vertical so you can live horizontal!
Prayer: Jesus, I thank you that you think about me. That alone captures my heart! Today, I set my gaze on you so my gaze on others is more clear. Today, I set my mind on you so I can live more intentionally and purposely with those around me. Today, I think vertical so I can live horizontal!
